ALCOHOL SALES TO MINORS

In February, the Washington Parish Sheriff's Office conducted two Juvenile Underage Drinking Enforcement operations and participated in a third with the Bogalusa Police Department.  Numerous  parish businesses were visited and an attempt was made by an underage customer to purchase alcohol at each location.  Some businesses were visited more than once.  On fifteen occasions,  business clerks were willing to sell to the underage customer in violation of Louisiana law which requires identification and age verification for alcohol sales.  The clerk who sold alcohol to a minor was given a summons to appear in court.

The first enforcement operation, conducted by the Sheriff's Office,  identified the following four businesses and store employees  cited for selling alcohol to a minor:

PA Hilltop, 59269 Highway 10, Bogalusa, employee Kuldip Khurana

Liberty Fuel Stop, 63298 Highway 10 East, Bogalusa, employee Renjeet Singh

Texaco, 846 Avenue F, Bogalusa, employee Sonja Vaughan

Fair City Chevron, 1800 Washington Street, Franklinton, employee Jackie Walker

During the same enforcement operation, numerous businesses complied with the law, reviewed identification,  and refused to sell alcohol to a minor.  Those businesses were:

Hackley Hill, 31141 Sam Thomas Road, Franklinton

Thirteen businesses refused to sell alcohol to a minor during the second enforcement operation.  Those businesses were:

Liberty Fuel Stop, 63298 Highway 10, Bogalusa

Chevron, 63227 Highway 10 East, Bogalusa

A third enforcement operation was conducted by the Sheriff's Office and the Bogalusa Police Department.  Store clerks at four Bogalusa businesses were cited for selling alcohol to a minor.  Those businesses and clerks were:

Chevron, 103 Marshall Richardson Road, employee Shawn Singletary

CVS, 329 Superior Avenue, employee Barbra Bryd

Kassim Stop N Save, 120 Carolina Avenue, employee Ali Yehya

S&P Truck Stop, 63208 Highway 10 East, employee Singh Ranjeet

During the same joint operation, twelve Bogalusa businesses complied with state law and refused to sell alcohol to a minor.  Those businesses were:

Thrifty Store (Green Store), 802 Sabine Street

Walgreens, 217 Superior Avenue

Power Food and Convenience, 1756 St. Louis Street

Highway 10 One Stop, 59269 Highway 10 West

Nore Stop and Shop, 304 Georgia Avenue

Wal-Mart, 401 Ontario Avenue

Chevron, 1201 Sunset Drive

Quick Stop Superette, 1003 S. Columbia

Bogalusa C Store, 1309 Columbia Street

"The solution is simple," stated Sheriff Randy Seal.  "A store clerk selling alcohol should always check for age verification when someone purchases alcohol and  refuse to sell alcohol to any person who is under age.  Although the business itself might not be fully responsible, the employee who sold alcohol to a minor is totally responsible.  I hope the fifteen clerks that did sell alcohol to a minor have learned to require identification from customers.  I commend  those parish businesses which verified the age of the minor and refused to sell alcohol.  They did it right."
