On October 8, Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office Lt. Ernie Corkern, along with Deputies Jonathan Williams and Randy Reviere, responded to the scene of a tragic accident in the area of Highway 437, just north of the St. Tammany Parish line.
While unloading logging equipment, Hillary Owens, 55, of Tickfaw, was crushed when a loading ramp of a heavy duty trailer fell on him. Owens was pronounced dead at the scene by responding emergency medical personnel and the Washington Parish Coroner’s Office.
Other loggers at the scene estimated the steel ramp weighed approximately 2,000 pounds and it is unknown what caused the ramp to fall. The ramp was eventually raised by air bags deployed by personnel from Fire Districts 1 and 8.
Sheriff Randy Seal commented. “Our prayers are extended to the family of Mr. Owens. This was a tragic event and I am grateful for the efforts of our deputies, firefighters and Northshore EMS personnel who responded so quickly.”
