Sheriff Seal Encourages ATV Safety

The recent death of a six year old boy who was killed in an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) crash in East Baton Rouge Parish underscores the importance of ATV safety.

Washington Parish Sheriff Randy Seal offers the following tips for ATV safety:

  • Don’t let children operate ATVs
  • Make certain all operators are properly trained
  • Always wear a helmet
  • Don’t ride tandem
  • Don’t ride on pavement
  • Don’t operate or ride under the influence

Sheriff Seal stated, “In a February report issued by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 13,000 ATV related deaths were reported nationwide between 1982 and 2013, including 262 in Louisiana.  This is a staggering number and emphasizes the need to practice ATV safety at all times.  ATVs are very useful vehicles when used properly, but they aren’t toys. They are powerful and potentially dangerous vehicles.   Please use caution at all times, especially when children are involved in any activity.”

Dr. James Perrin, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics, commented on children and ATVs, saying, “Children are not developmentally capable of operating these heavy, complex machines.  The American Academy of Pediatrics warns all parents that no child under the age of 16 should drive or ride an ATV.”
