A telephone scam which has been used across the country, and even in neighboring St. Tammany Parish, appears in the form of a telephone call from someone stating he or she is a deputy in the Sheriff’s Office. Although the scam has not surfaced in Washington Parish, Sheriff Randy Seal cautions parish residents not to fall for such scams if they do receive a call.
In this particular scam, the caller represents himself as a deputy in the Sheriff’s Office and says a warrant has been issued for the person’s arrest. The only way the arrest can be prevented is through a payment over the phone.
Sheriff Seal stated, “This is a despicable scam operated by despicable persons. Your Sheriff’s Office will never call you and ask for a money payment over the phone to avoid arrest. Our office doesn’t work that way. If you do happen to receive such a call, hang up immediately and notify our office.”
Any parish resident having any question about a suspicious telephone call or any other suspicious activity should contact the Sheriff’s Office at (985) 839-3434.
